Bed bridge:
what it is, and which of the two builds actually holds
Also called a mattress bridge or a bed bridge connector. Two builds carry the same name, and they behave very differently after a few nights.
What is a bed bridge?
One name, two builds, and the difference decides everything:
- The vertical build. A foam wedge, sometimes T-shaped, laid into the gap. It fills the space, so the gap is hidden. It connects nothing.
- The horizontal build. A strap that runs underneath both mattresses and pulls them towards each other. The gap cannot open, because the mattresses cannot drift apart.
- Both are sold as a bed bridge, a mattress bridge or a bed bridge connector. The word tells you nothing about which one you are getting.
Filling works against the force that opens the gap. Connecting removes the force. That is the whole difference.
Which two kinds of bed bridge exist?
Vertical into the gap, or horizontal underneath. Everything follows from that.
Fill it, or close it
The same word covers both, so it pays to look at where the thing actually sits.
Vertical, in the gap
A foam wedge or bolster. It hides the gap and costs little. It works while the mattresses barely move, so a guest bed or a holiday home is a fair use.
Horizontal, underneath
A strap under both mattresses, pulled snug. It cannot be squeezed out, because there is no direction for it to go.
A third thing people mean
Sometimes "bed bridge" is used for a frame or a board that joins two bed bases. That solves the bases, not the mattresses on top of them.
Which bed bridge fits which bed?
The bed decides, not the price.
On a phone, swipe the table sideways.
| Your bed | Foam wedge | Strap (horizontal) |
|---|---|---|
| Guest bed, used now and then | Fine | Also fine, but more than you need |
| Boxspring, slept in every night | Works loose | Holds |
| Two twin beds pushed together | Works loose | Holds |
| Split king, head section moves | Gets pushed out | Moves with the bed |
| Split king, head and foot both move | No | Not for long either |
| Two different firmness levels | Leaves a ridge | Holds, keeps both firmnesses |
Can a bed bridge make two twin beds into a king?
Yes, and the sizes work out neatly.
On a phone, swipe the table sideways.
| Two mattresses | What you get | Fitted sheet |
|---|---|---|
| 2 x twin (38 x 75 in) | King-ish, 76 x 75 in | King |
| 2 x twin XL (38 x 80 in) | King, 76 x 80 in | King |
| 2 x 90 x 200 cm | 180 x 200 cm | 180 x 200 cm |
| 2 x 80 x 200 cm | 160 x 200 cm | 160 x 200 cm |
- Lengths must match. Two different lengths leave a visible step at the foot of the bed.
- Heights may differ a little. Up to about an inch you will not feel it under a taut sheet.
- The bases need to touch along their whole length before the mattresses go on.
- The 80 cm strap covers pairs measuring 140 to 200 cm (55 to 79 in) wide in total.
Why does a foam bed bridge stop working?
It is not the foam. It is the direction.
Working against the force
Anything laid into the gap stands in the way of the force that opens it.
What happens
Two people move, the mattresses push sideways, and the foam has nowhere to go but up. After a few nights the wedge lies on the sheet instead of under it.
Where it does work
A bed that stays still: a guest room, a holiday let, or a stopgap until something permanent arrives.
What it never does
Connect. Two mattresses with a wedge between them are still two separate objects.
How does the horizontal build work?
It goes under both mattresses instead of between them.
Removing the force
It fills nothing. It stops the gap from forming in the first place.
Nowhere to escape to
It sits under the mattresses, not in the gap. There is no direction it can be pushed out of.
Fits most beds
Boxsprings, slatted bases, two twin beds pushed together, adjustable beds where only the head moves.
Not suitable for
Beds where head and foot both tilt independently. We would rather say that up front.
“We started with a wedge. Three nights later it was back on top of the sheet. With the strap the whole thing has been a non-issue for months.”Customer review, 180 cm boxspring
What does the horizontal build look like in use?
The strap runs under both mattresses, not around the bases.
Which bed bridge should you actually buy?
That is a different question, and it has its own page.
This page is about what a bed bridge is. Which one to buy depends on your bed, your budget and how often the bed is used, and those trade-offs deserve more room than a paragraph.
We put the five common solutions side by side there, including the cases where a foam wedge is the sensible choice and our own product is not. If you already know you want the connecting build, the order page has the sizes and the trial period.

No more falling in the crack.
“I was hesitant to buy but I am glad I did. It works so well and you can't feel that it's there. No more falling in the crack.”
This one binds the bed together.
“I had one of those bed binders that went up the split. It always sank down into the split. This one binds the bed together and bridges the split. Now, I don't fall into the crack.”
Can't feel it at all.
“It was easy for me to install by myself. After I made the bed, I can't feel it at all under the mattress pad and sheet. I'm happy with the purchase.”

Common questions about bed bridges
Including the answers that do not favour us.
What is a bed bridge?
A bed bridge is anything meant to close the gap between two mattresses pushed together. The word covers two very different builds: a foam wedge that fills the gap from above, and a strap that runs underneath both mattresses and pulls them together. Only the second one connects the mattresses; the first one fills the space between them.
Is a mattress bridge the same thing as a bed bridge?
Yes. Mattress bridge, bed bridge, bedbridge, bed bridge connector and mattress connector all point at the same idea: closing the gap where two mattresses meet. Shops use whichever word they prefer, which is exactly why it pays to look at the build rather than the name.
Which type of bed bridge works on a split king adjustable bed?
Only the horizontal type, and only if the head section moves on its own. A strap runs under both mattresses and moves with them. A foam wedge sits in the gap and gets pushed out the moment the bed changes shape. If both head and foot sections tilt independently, no bed bridge holds for long; then you secure each mattress separately.
Can a bed bridge turn twin beds into a king?
It turns two twin mattresses into one sleeping surface, which is what most people mean. Two twin XL mattresses side by side measure the same as a king. The bases still need to sit tight against each other; the bed bridge handles the mattresses on top.
Why does a foam bed bridge stop working after a few nights?
Because it works against the same force that opens the gap. Every movement pushes the mattresses apart and the foam upward, so after a few nights the wedge lies on top of the sheet instead of underneath it. That is not bad foam, that is the direction it is fighting.
Do you feel a bed bridge when you lie on it?
Not the horizontal type. The strap sits underneath both mattresses, so nothing comes between you and the sheet. A foam wedge sits in the gap itself, and most people do notice that ridge, especially when they sleep in the middle.
What does a bed bridge cost?
A foam wedge usually runs between 15 and 40 euros and gets replaced as the foam loses shape. The Bedbinder Deluxe is 49.95 euros, once, washable at 30 degrees, with a 7 year guarantee on the buckles. Order here and you get 90 nights to try it; on bol.com or Amazon the platform term applies, usually 30 days.
Which bed bridge should I buy?
That depends on your bed, and it is a separate question from what a bed bridge is. We compare the five common solutions side by side on the bed bridge comparison page, including the cases where our own product is not the answer.
