A clean mattress without a steam cleaner
Vacuum, treat the stains, let it dry. About an hour of work, most of which is waiting, and your mattress stays fresh for years longer.
How do you clean a mattress properly?
Four steps, and most people skip the last one.
Dry cleaning regularly, wet cleaning only in spots. In this order:
- Vacuum and brush. Strip the bedding first, then go over the mattress with the upholstery nozzle.
- Lift odors with baking soda. Sprinkle thinly, leave it for hours, vacuum it all up.
- Treat stains one at a time. Never soak the whole mattress. Always blot from the outside in.
- Let it dry completely. This is the step people get wrong.

What actually matters when cleaning a mattress
Three things decide whether the cleaning holds or is just work.
Home remedies: what works and what does not
Baking soda absorbs moisture and odor. It does not remove old stains.
White vinegar helps with urine because it neutralizes the smell instead of covering it.
What does not work is soaking the mattress and hoping. The foam fills with water, moisture stays at the bottom, and that is where mold grows.
Yellow and brown stains, honestly
Those are dried sweat and body oils, not dirt sitting on the surface.
A baking soda paste lifts the fresh ones. Old ones rarely come out completely.
Anyone promising a mattress that looks new again is selling you something.
After cleaning: protect instead of repeat
A washable protector catches sweat before it reaches the foam.
Wash it with the sheets every two weeks and you will barely need to clean the mattress itself.
What you can do yourself
About an hour, and most of that is drying time.
Step 1: vacuum
Strip the bedding and wash it if the label allows. Then vacuum the mattress with the upholstery nozzle, including the sides and the seams.
Step 2: lift the odor
Sprinkle baking soda thinly, leave it at least four hours, overnight is better. Then vacuum all of it back up.
Step 3: treat stains one at a time
Urine with water and a little white vinegar. Blood with cold water only, warm water sets it. Sweat with a baking soda paste.
Always blot, never rub, and work from the outside in so the stain does not spread.
Step 4: let it dry completely
At least eight hours upright with a window open. Put the sheets back only when the spot feels dry, not just looks dry.
- Steam cleaner: innerspring only. On memory foam and latex the heat can loosen the glue between the layers.
- Bed bugs: cleaning does not remove them. That is a pest control job, and washing the bedding at 60 degrees is the part you can do.
- How often: vacuum every four weeks, deep clean twice a year.
- Dust mites: they do not die from cleaning, they die from dryness. Airing the room beats any spray.
- When to replace: when a dip stays behind with nobody lying in it.
The one spot no nozzle reaches
If you sleep on two mattresses, you clean around a seam every single time.
You just spent an hour on this. Vacuuming, baking soda, drying.
The question after that is: how long does it stay this way?
On a bed with one mattress, a long time. A protector on top, washed with the sheets, and that is it.
With two mattresses side by side it is different. A seam runs between them.
Crumbs, skin flakes and moisture collect there. The upholstery nozzle does not fit into it.
So every time, you clean around a spot you never actually reach.
When the mattresses are held together, that seam is gone. The Bedbinder Deluxe connects them with a strap system, in 60 seconds, without tools.
It is washable at 30 degrees, two or three times a year is enough, and it is OEKO-TEX certified.
If you sleep on one mattress, you do not need it.
What people with two mattresses tell us
Reviews from customers who knew this exact seam.
No more falling in the crack.
“I was hesitant to buy but I am glad I did. It works so well and you can't feel that it's there. No more falling in the crack.”
This one binds the bed together.
“I had one of those bed binders that went up the split. It always sank down into the split. This one binds the bed together and bridges the split. Now, I don't fall into the crack.”
Can't feel it at all.
“It was easy for me to install by myself. After I made the bed, I can't feel it at all under the mattress pad and sheet. I'm happy with the purchase.”

Frequently asked questions about cleaning a mattress
The questions Google itself shows for this topic.
What is the best thing to clean a mattress with?
A vacuum with an upholstery nozzle for the dry work, baking soda for odor, and water with a little white vinegar for stains. No steam on foam.
How do you get yellow brown stains out of a mattress?
Those are dried sweat. A paste of baking soda and a little water, left to dry, then vacuumed off. Old stains rarely come out completely.
How do I deep clean my mattress?
Vacuum, baking soda for several hours, treat stains one at a time, then at least eight hours of drying upright with a window open.
How to disinfect a mattress from bed bugs?
Cleaning does not solve bed bugs. Wash all bedding at 60 degrees and call pest control, because they live in the frame and the room, not only the mattress.
Can I use a steam cleaner on my mattress?
Only on innerspring mattresses. On memory foam and latex the heat can loosen the glue between the layers.
How often should you clean a mattress?
Vacuum every four weeks, deep clean twice a year. The cover more often, depending on the label.
How long does a mattress need to dry after cleaning?
At least eight hours, standing upright with a window open. Putting the sheets back too early is the most common cause of mold.
When is a new mattress better than cleaning this one?
When a dip stays behind with nobody lying in it, or when the smell comes back after it has dried.
